Metamorphic reduced sickness & boosted local economy in Cambodia
In Cambodia, many rural communities face a constant challenge—lack of access to clean water. For these communities, this isn’t just an inconvenience, but a matter of life and death. Without reliable sources of clean water, people are forced to use unsafe water, leading to waterborne diseases that harm children and adults alike. The consequences of this issue are wide-reaching: children miss school, adults miss work, and entire families suffer from preventable illnesses.
In addition to the struggles caused by unsafe water, sanitation is also a critical issue. Many children are unaware of the importance of hygiene and safe water usage, which leads to unsafe practices like defecating in fields or along roadsides. These actions only further spread diseases. For adults, the impact is no less severe. They too face the health risks of waterborne diseases, which decreases their productivity in local markets, fields, and workplaces. It was clear that a sustainable solution was needed to break this cycle of illness, poverty, and missed opportunities.
Metamorphic International recognized the depth of the problem and decided to step in with a solution tailored to the community’s specific needs. They began by working closely with local residents to understand the challenges they faced. Through community consultations, the project was designed to focus on both water access and sanitation. The key was to create a project that wasn’t just a temporary fix but a sustainable, long-term solution.
One of the main strategies implemented by Metamorphic International was the introduction of rainwater harvesting systems. These systems were placed on school rooftops, collecting rainwater to provide clean water for local latrines and domestic use. By providing a reliable source of water, the community no longer had to rely on unsafe, bought bottled water or contaminated local sources. Alongside this, a one-year water hygiene curriculum was introduced in schools, aiming to teach children about safe water usage and sanitation practices. The curriculum helped educate future generations, ensuring that good hygiene practices would be passed down and ingrained in the community for years to come.

In addition to the educational aspect, Metamorphic International also worked with local adults, providing training in community development and water system maintenance. This not only empowered locals to take charge of their own water management but also helped ensure the long-term sustainability of the project. The collaboration with the local community was key to the project’s success, as it encouraged ownership and participation, which are essential for lasting change.
The impact of the project has been profound. Over 15,000 people have directly benefited from the new water and sanitation systems. Most notably, the introduction of clean water has drastically reduced the spread of waterborne diseases, and child mortality rates have decreased by at least 50%. The initiative also led to a significant reduction in absenteeism. School absenteeism dropped by 30%, and work absenteeism fell by 20%, as fewer people fell ill. With the community healthier and more productive, average household income increased by 40%. As a result, the locals have a much more positive outlook on life, and their economic situation is steadily improving.
The success of the project is a testament to the power of local collaboration. By listening to the needs of the community and involving residents in every step of the process, Metamorphic International was able to create a project that was not only effective but also sustainable. Locally sourced materials were used as much as possible, and local contractors were employed, ensuring that the project was grounded in the community and had a long-lasting impact.
Looking forward, Metamorphic International’s work continues to be a shining example of how community-driven solutions can change lives. With the success in Cambodia, the organization is poised to expand its efforts to other regions in need. Their work is a reminder that by empowering local communities with the tools, knowledge, and resources they need, we can create a healthier and more prosperous world for all.
