Transforming Congo’s Food System with Solar-Powered Cold Storage
In Congo-Brazzaville, thousands of smallholder farmers have faced a quiet but devastating crisis–food that never makes it to market. In rural communities where temperatures are high and infrastructure is limited, up to 50% of harvested fruits and vegetables are spoiled within just two days. What should have been nourishment and income quickly turned into waste.
The consequences were severe. Farmers lost up to 25% of their annual revenue. In pilot communities alone, more than 5,000 farmers lost nearly (US) $1 million each year. Women, who make up the majority of produce vendors and market gardeners were especially affected, struggling to earn even $60 per month. At the same time, communities experienced shortages of safe, nutritious food, while decomposing produce contributed to unnecessary greenhouse gas emissions. Without reliable cold storage, hunger, poverty, and environmental damage became deeply interconnected challenges.
It became clear that without intervention, the cycle of food loss and economic instability would continue.
A Simple Idea with Transformative Power
Recognizing the urgency of the crisis, GreenBox™ launched an innovative solution designed specifically for off-grid rural communities. Rather than relying on unstable electricity or costly diesel refrigeration, the initiative introduced solar-powered cold storage hubs that operate entirely on renewable energy.
GreenBox™ was designed with a simple but transformative goal: protect harvested food long enough for farmers to sell it at fair market value. By extending the shelf life of perishable produce from just two days to up to 21 days, the system dramatically reduces post-harvest losses—by as much as 90%.
The initiative goes beyond infrastructure. Through an integrated mobile application, farmers receive real-time market insights and crop monitoring support, helping them make informed decisions about when and where to sell their produce. Training programs equip women and youth with technical skills in renewable energy, cold chain management, and sustainable agriculture.
By combining clean energy, digital tools, and community empowerment, GreenBox™ is reshaping fragile rural food systems into resilient, climate-smart networks.
Measurable Impact on Income, Food Security, and Climate
The results have been transformative.
An estimated 20,400 tons of perishable food are prevented from spoiling annually. More than 3,500 smallholder farmers, retailers, and wholesalers, approximately 80% of them women–have increased their monthly income by 50%, from (US) $60 to (US) $120, simply by preserving and selling more of their harvest.
Beyond economic gains, the environmental benefits are significant. Solar-powered cold rooms have contributed to a 51% reduction in carbon emissions by preventing food waste and replacing fossil-fuel refrigeration. Eighteen new jobs have been created for women as hub operators and market attendants, while over 500 young women and youth have been trained in renewable energy and technical skills.
In total, more than 31,000 people have experienced improved livelihoods and expanded access to safe, nutritious food through strengthened cold chain services.
